How to Keep Morale and Productivity Up When Times are Tough

Downsizing, mergers, acquisitions and leadership transitions are among the more common and challenging organizational changes that human resource professionals are tasked with navigating effectively. The need for the human resources workforce to be equipped with skills to navigate these transitions is substantial, and recent research confirms it; Deloitte notes that the rate of projected mergers and acquisitions is at an all-time high and the Bureau of Labor and Statistics showcases the increasing rate of baby boomers approaching retirement. Not to mention, a survey conducted by the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce reported that workforce challenges continues to be the number one issue impacting North Dakota businesses.

Maintaining high levels of morale and productivity when times are tough is vital for the overall growth and health of the organization; however, particularly during times of transition, attitudes and behaviors are contagious and it takes only one person to either negatively or positively influence the masses. More often than not, change elicits fear and uncertainty, which can tank engagement and create additional barriers to move forward and rebuild.

Bethany Berkeley is dedicated to helping individuals and organizations thrive by uncovering and maximizing their natural talents, passions and purpose. She earned her degree from the University of Texas at Austin where she was a research fellow. She is the Corporate Solutions Consultant at Dale Carnegie of ND and MN where she collaborates with businesses to drive productivity and revenue through innovative leadership development and employee engagement practices. ┬áBethany is a frequent speaker on business strategy and leadership development. She serves on several Boards of Directors, including Creative Care for Reaching Independence, Hope Blooms, and The Great North Pole. She serves as a member of the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber Business Training Committee. She is a graduate of the United Way’s 35 Under 35 Program and Chamber Leadership program.
