Moorhead, Minn. (April 12, 2016) – The Chamber and the Business Leaders Taskforce for Permanent Flood Protection remain steadfast in F-M Diversion support.
As the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce, we represent a thriving business climate in our area, and it is critical that we evaluate our priorities on a regular basis. The two largest issues our business region face are achieving permanent flood protection, certified by the Army Corps of Engineers, through the F-M Diversion, and workforce. It is nearly impossible to decipher which is the most pertinent considering they are truly linked.
We find the recent discussion at the April 11 Fargo City Commission meeting deplorable. With more than six years of research put into this project and over $200 million spent, now is not the time to pause. Shifting focus to a temporary fix does not and will not provide the necessary protection that the only certifiable solution, the F-M Diversion, brings.
“It is crucial to do the opposite of what was discussed at the city commission meeting,” Craig Whitney, president and CEO of The Chamber, said. “Now is not the time to be pressing the pause button. Rather, with recent successes in mind, we need to hold down the play button to continue this positive movement forward.”
Jon Riewer, chair of The Chamber’s board of directors, added that, “Achieving certifiable permanent flood protection through the F-M Diversion is one of the number one priorities we see as a community need, and it will continue to be at the top of our list until the project is complete.”
Now is not the time to lose sight of the countless hours and tremendous effort put in to permanently protecting our communities from potentially disastrous flooding. The Chamber, along with the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation, Homebuilders Association of Fargo-Moorhead and the F-M Area Association of Realtors continue to work diligently with all of our elected leaders, community leaders, numerous organizations and congressional members and their staff to continue the progress this federally authorized project has made, and we are committed to seeing it completed.
