The Cities With The Best and Worst Unemployment Rates

Which U.S. city has the lowest unemployment rate? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it’s Bismarck, North Dakota.

Fargo—North Dakota’s largest city—has the second lowest unemployment rate in the country. Only 2.6%, or 3,000 of the 117,400 people in Fargo’s labor force, were unemployed and looking for jobs in November.

“So many great businesses are operating here and others are wanting to because of the strong business climate and outstanding ‘Midwestern work ethic,’” says Craig Whitney, president and CEO of the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce. “This all helps contribute to the low unemployment rate.”

The area’s biggest employers include Sanford Health, North Dakota State University, Fargo Public Schools, Blue Cross Blue Shield of ND/Noridian and Microsoft, among others. The largest industries: manufacturing and technology.

“The unemployment rate has remained fairly, steadily low with the exception of some complications during the worst of the economic downturn,” Whitney says. “I think unemployment is low because of the strong business climate.”

He says the Fargo area ranks high on lists such as the “Best Places to do Business,” “Best Places to Live and Raise a Family” and “Best Places for Young Professionals.”

“Strong Midwestern family values and work ethic contribute highly to our success. The state also enjoys one of the largest state budget surpluses in the nation,” Whitney adds.
